Today is international day for the elimination of violence against women and girls. Toady at Mcrissar Foundation, we are making a commitment to raise public awareness on violence against women and girls. This day also marks an important day towards the support to bring an end to sexual violence against women and girls. Violence against women has been underreported due to stigma and shame especially here in Nigeria and even Africa as a whole. According to the United Nations, 45% of women have been affected directly or indirectly by VAWG since the Covid-19 pandemic started, in other words, there has been a rise in VAWG.

Violence against women and girls is a violation of human rights and we all need to protect and speak out on behalf of women and girls that are affected. It is sad that every 11 minutes, a woman or girl somewhere is killed by an intimate partner due to violence or sexual assault.

This kind of inhumane act limits a girl’s potential, making them unable to achieve their goals like men in the society. We have to know that women are very important decision makers, and we need them at the decision making table. This is the time for transformation and recovery. We need to #Unite to bring an end to VAWG.
Since 1981, women’s rights activists and organizations around the world have observed the 25th of November as the international day for the elimination of violence against women.

This day was selected to honour three sisters (The Mirabal sisters) these sisters were political activists from the Dominican Republic, and they were brutally murdered in 1960 by the order of the Dominican ruler at that time in the person of Rafael Trujillo (1930-1961).

Today, more than ever, we will raise our voices and fight for women and girls who have been affected in one way or the other in marginalized communities, schools and other places across Kaduna State. We are committed to supporting the sustainable development goals No 5 and 10 which has to do with gender equality and reduced inequalities. Let’s #Unite against gender-based violence and sexual harassment.
